Small victory

I had a horrible night at work and I’m in a lot of pain. The whole drive home I fought the urge to stop and get alcohol. I almost broke. This is just day one. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Breaking old habits is one of the most difficult parts of early sobriety. I, too, was an afterwork drinker. I work in a high stress, long hour job so stopping for a quick dinner and drink after work made perfect sense. No time to cook before bedtime and I wanted to destress a bit. To use (another) old AA phrase, play the tape when these urges arise. Before acting, pause and think a few moves ahead, beyond the first drink. Will I stop at one? Will I feel ashamed and full of regret tomorrow? Will this impact my health? Etc, specific to your history/situation. Dragging the craving from my irrational brain into the harsh light of my rational brain is more helpful to me than trying to just will myself through it (that usually failed). It's good you're sharing here. Keep it up, friend.
