Step 1 does not put you where you want to be, but rescues you from where you were.
We take step 1 when we admit we are out of control and that this lack of control makes our life unmanageable. It may seem little, but just realizing you are powerless is a huge step.
Remember step 1 does not put you where you want to be, but takes you out of where you have been.
Much has changed in my life. Obsession, aggression, anxiety, anger and numerous other character defects gave way to a cause that brings me a peace and serenity I never imagined existed. But it's not a single dose vaccine, it requires constant practice. It requires my living the remaing 11 steps.
Daily recovery disciplines - like emotional reconstruction, rational thinking, therapy, and connectnedness to others - strengthen me and don't let me forget where I've been and where I don't want to go back. Recovery gives me the opportunity to maintain this practice of rebuilding and expressing my gratitude, giving my hand to the alcoholic, addict or to anyone who still suffers, as others did to me with much love. All this reverberates in energy and peace so that I keep my balance day to day to face reality.
