Happiness is an inside job.

I know someone is experiencing a gift of recovery when despite all the turmoil, he or she  says, "You know, I am really still pretty happy." Recently, a patient of mine with 90 days of sobriety was finally sentenced for his third DUI on the same day he lost his job. Instead of depression, he said that he felt good. He expressed gratitude for the support of his Sponsor and new friends in AA. He said his daily prayer and practice of trying to do God's will gave him a sense of peace, hope, confidence and happiness. Another patient on the same day told me that he made one hundred thousand dollars because a business deal closed in his favor. He looked at me sadly saying, "I don't know why I feel this emptiness." He said he was confused because he had lots of money and things but that they never seemed to give him the serenity he thought they should.

To-do:

Happiness comes from within not from the outside World. Today, I will practice the 12 steps to develop the inner joy that the outside world cannot provide. I will not depend on the World and its things and inhabitants to conform to my desires in order to give me happiness.
