If you have ever sincerely quoted the Tom Cruise character in the popular film Jerry McGuire by telling someone, "You complete me," you may have felt good for the moment, but in the long run you are asking for trouble. Codependence causes stress. You are an individual, complete in and of yourself. Although you need fellowship and support to stay sober, you do not need anyone else to validate your completeness or to make you feel worthwhile. When you depend on someone else to complete you, you are using the other person like a drug. It is a blessing to love another, but trying to control another or depending on another for fulfillment can cause relapse.
Tell yourself you do not need others to love yourself.
